Extended Family: West
Single Family Housing
Culver City, CA

Description:
One of the main focuses for this project is to provide the extended family
with a solution to their issue of mixed generations in one household.
This is solved by creating a hierarchical scheme that is modeled around
one of the most durable structures, the pyramid. By using the pyramid,
the needed space and place for each generation is able to be organized
so that each one serves their role: the apex (parents), the body (children),
and the base (grandmother/ aunt).  Structurally, each part of the pyramid
is essential to its form. Each piece is unique, however each piece is also
nothing without any of the other pieces. By unfolding the pyramid and
extruding the facades, the essence of the pyramid is investigated and the
form is discovered.

The other important aspect of this project is that the clients want a safe
household for their children, so this concern is integrated as a supplemental
part to the intent. A focus on creating a sense of protection is applied to the
programmatic scheme of the spaces. The idea is that the parents are at the
entrance in order to view incoming visitors, the children are enclosed in the
middle, and the grandmother and aunt are positioned at the rear of the
property to keep a mindful watch on the children at play in the backyard.
